So, I've done this before, but I figured it was time for a re-hash and update.
Back on this board after a long absence...I've been lurking here and TOS, but they won't approve me over there.
Two kind of contradictory points I see brought up are:
1) This offense is going to be be on fire when we implement the Run and Shoot part of Johnson's offense!
2) Our passing game is so bad because the Run and Shoot and the spread option are both so time-intensive
Lest we forget.. Johnson is not only the head coach but also the offensive coordinator. There are very few if any D-1 head coaches that are also the offensive or defensive coordinator and as involved in special teams as Johnson.
Most coaches that are coordinators and head coaches generally give up the coordinator role at some point to focus on being a head coach. Let alone be the coordinator and then get more involved in special teams.
1.) The over/under for hearing the first "Vad Lee" chant is the North Carolina game. Tech people love Horatio Alger stories and it's romantic to think Tevin will have a Joe Hamilton type turnaround. However, there are differences. Hamilton was a redshirt freshmen not a redshirt sophmore. Also, Hamilton's turnaround was aided by Ralph Friedgen coming in 1997. Tevin has been in this offense since 2008 and still made key mistakes in crunch time in 2010.
Georgia Tech hasn't had many strong starts over the years. We haven't started even 4-0 since the 1990 team started with five straight wins. Before that, while we were lost in the desert, you have to go back to 1970 for another 5-0 start.
We were 9-0 in 1966 before losing the last two to Georgia and Florida, andstarted 7-0 in 1964. In '56 and '51 we were 6-0. And, of course, 12-0 in 1952. This year we could realistically be 6-0 headed to Virginia, and if we are, I think we could
As much as I would love to see us go 12-0 and win the Orange Bowl, realistically I don't really think that will happen this year. I do think we could go10-2 with a Bowl win at the end.
We should win our first five games against W. Carolina, Middle Tennessee St., Kansas, North Carolina, and NC state. After that I'll leave it up for discussion. We really need to beat UGA and get back winning our Bowl games where ever we go!!
