Will GT Be Able to Find a Coach??

The Paul Johnson apologists when responding to cries for Paul Johnson to be fired would respond with, "Yeah but if Paul left, who would want to come here?" Could they be right? Will no one want the job?

I read an AJC article (Paul Johnson’s offense let Georgia Tech do more with less. So no) which suggested that made some good points that the new coach will have to deal with.

Brand Recognition: "But, assuming Stansbury doesn’t hire another option devotee, there will be a big cultural change for Tech football. Johnson’s option has been its brand. That’s what allowed Tech to punch above its weight and, no matter your views on its entertainment value, it worked. Johnson’s offense was that edge for more than a decade. He proved that it can work at a Power 5 school. Now he’s leaving, and Tech will look for a new coach to run a program that for so long was created in the unique image of Johnson’s offense."

Recruiting: "Tech’s new coach also will have a low bar to clear in recruiting. Johnson’s classes ranked near the bottom of the ACC recruiting rankings and, despite Johnson’s protestations, they do matter in the aggregate. He disputed the perception that he doesn’t like to recruit, but the results are what they are."

Money and Budget: "Beyond the academic challenges, there’s money. Johnson’s salary this season ranked mid-pack in the ACC, and Tech’s total spending on football is near the bottom of the league. Tech doesn’t spend like a school that wants big-time football, which is fine, but then that limits what’s possible over the long run."

    Go JACKETS! THWG!

    BINGO!

When you surround yourself with unbelievable men of character and relentless recruiters who give great effort and care about the student-athlete and want them to be successful in every single phase of their lives, and tie that together with a great place, you have a chance to build something special.”

"Stansbury also has at least two candidates who would hope to speak with him about the opening. Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and Alabama offensive line coach Brent Key are believed to have interest in succeeding Johnson."

Report of an interview, two interested candidates, Stansbury’s plan

I think if we had access to Stansbury's text, you would see a lot of interest. Tech has its challenges but it is in the middle of talent rich area. Stansbury may be soft-hearted when it comes to coaches but he is good at raising money. The facilities upgrades will be noticed by coaching candidates.

The ONLY way that the football program can upgrade is to 1.get better recruits 2. KEEP the guys in the program which PJ did not do. Running a different offense for 2 yrs is going to be a REAL problem with the players here. The DEF lacks good BIG guys also. --2 losing seasons very possible. Stormy times ahead.
