    Rutgers and Maryland

It is the conventional wisdom that Rutgers and Maryland will have a rough baptism into the glorious league that is known as the Big Ten. They just don't have the program or the roster depth or the intestinal fortitude to hang with the big boys. Well, I seem to remember similar declarations when Texas A&M and Missouri entered the SEC. It was going to "take years" before they would be able to be competitive. Was not true. If Maryland or Rutgers or both have success immediately, what will that say about the relative strengths of the various conferences? Now, I have heard pundits say it might take Rutgers ten f'ng years to make the adjustment. I am not saying that either of them win the league and go to the Rose Bowl, but I think they will be as good or better than Minnesota, or Iowa, or Purdue and Indiana and Illinois. They might be better than Penn State and Michigan. I hope they do well and I believe that will go a long way in abolishing this myth that such and such a conference is just head and shoulders above the others. I am not a big fan of parity, but I have the feeling the top four or five in every league are getting closer and closer. I would love to see everybody playing more OOC against quality non-conference foes, but unfortunately I think the schools are going to go in the opposite direction, leaving the big intersectional games to be left to the playoffs. More money.

Ralph is the OC at Rutgers, so I will be rooting for them to take the B1G championship.
