    Duke Has Passed Paul Johnson

Duke and David Cutcliffe won the Coastal last year (they lost to GT last season, their starting QB was out). Duke has 17 starters back in 2014 and GT is predicted to be a bottom feeder in 2014.

So if Cutcliffe can raise up one of the worst programs in college football, why can't Paul Johnson do the same at GT? Is Cutcliffe that much better of a coach than Johnson??

Like to hear the excuses from the Paul Johnson apologists on this one. Thank you for your time, there will be parting gifts.

[B] All I know Jim is David C is a good football coach and its clear he can moitivate. He did well at Ole Miss and we all know he can coach qbs.Dook has been down so long that last year was kind of good to see.Yeah Dook still a bb team according to students but if they start winning regularyl like they did in the fifties etc they will be for real.Tech ......well we just aint getting it done. Our folks who sign are usually not use to the option and even though we got great years out of JN and JD and others ,we just dont get the hosses we need.I still say the offense we run is not a big time offense for if it was so great......why are not schools running it ? Been a beliver all the time that no excuses for football.........one loses and one wins and the idea of coaching is to be on winning side or find out what went wrong when we lose..If we lose to Dook next year we are in same boat we were in this year......PJ has heat on his butt and rightfully so.......so DAMN tired of this excuse and that ..........we aint getting it done.

It remains to be seen if Cutcliffe has truly "raised up one of the worst programs" yet. Let him finish first or second in the division for four years straight and we'll be able to say he has made Duke a first tier team. But I don't need to see Duke in the ACCCG every other year to know that David Cutcliffe is a pretty decent coach, and a significantly better head coach than Paul Johnson. At both Mississippi and Duke, Cutcliffe arrived with nothing and recruited his way to success. CPJ had decent talent in 2008 and admittedly did well with it even tho most of the offensive players were not option savvy. The talent base has seriously devolved since he became head coach.
Anyone who saw Cutcliffe speaking to the team after they clinched the division would have to agree he is of a completely different style than Paul. He instructed each player to reach out to a person or persons that had influenced them to attend Duke and to be a football player--coach, parent, friend, pastor--to find them and to thank them for guiding them to this day, this field, this win. It was very uplifting. I have the impression we subcontract that role to Derrick Moore, who is phenomenal, but he isn't the leader of the program. Cutcliffe leads.

Well, the only thing I would say is Wake won an ACC title one year (painful memory, I know), but I doubt anyone would argue they passed us as a program. Cutcliffe is a good coach and has definitely improved their program. 2 straight bowls for them is huge, but I think they should actually have to beat us in a game and have a better 3 year run than us, at least, before we crown them. I don't think anyone would trade Johnson's overall record at Tech, for Cutcliffe's record at Duke. I know they inherited different situations, but still. Johnson is still, overall, a much more accomplished coach. Last two years? Yeah, Duke is trending up and we're standing still, but I prefer to look at things long term.

Here's the thing that agitates me. I'm not totally sold on Johnson myself, and wouldn't be upset with a change. But can we at least base our attacks on him on some logic and reason?

It's easier to recruit kids to awesome Durham, NC and Duke doesn't have the curriculum disadvantages we do?

I'm not sold on Duke though. They're a one-year wonder until I see more. As good as they allegedly were in 2013, we whipped 'em. And we weren't that great.

Agreed - they beat VT with Logan throwing 4 INTs, beat Miami without Duke Johnson, and really didn't have another good win. Pitt or UVA is next up in terms of their wins, and we beat both of those teams as well.

I wonder how Cutcliffe would have done had he been hired by GT in '08? Where would the Cutcliffe Yellow Jackets be today? This question gets to the heart of Jims comment, doesn't it. All other things being equal (recruits, location, class offerrings, type of school (public/private - religeous/technical)), would only a different head coach have made a world of difference?

    Go JACKETS! THWG!

You guys are ridiculous. Duke has "passed" us? The program we've beaten 22 times in the last 24 tries? The team we smashed 38-14 last season on the road? So stupid. Is Cutcliffe a better coach than Johnson? Yes. Would I take Cutcliffe over Johnson? Yes. Is Ole Miss stupid for firing Cutcliffe? IMO, yes. But come on. Duke is a better program than Georgia Tech?? HAHAHAHA. Thanks for the laugh.
