Athlon's Ranking of 2014 ACC Rosters

Not very good. They have us 10th out of 14 teams.

    Ranking the ACC's Football Rosters for 2014 | AthlonSports.com

    Their Summary of Tech:

Paul Johnson knows what he is doing
Has Georgia Tech lost a lot of games over the last four years? Yes, 25 in fact. But Johnson's team trails only Florida State (26), Clemson (24) and Virginia Tech (24) for ACC wins over the last four seasons. And he is doing it with one of the "poorer" rosters in the league. Johnson's depth chart ranks 10th in terms of talent entering this fall but his teams consistently beat those ranked above them as it relates to recruiting. He is 6-for-6 in postseason berths, has won three division titles and at least five ACC games in three straight seasons. Despite what could be perceived as an apparent lack of talent, Tech should once again compete for a division crown in '14.

Same old argument. Do the stars predict who we need to succeed? Some say an athlete is an athlete - a 5* in any system will out do a 3*. Some say we need something sort of different and star ratings don't quite work as a good predictor for our system. Yadda, Yadda, Yadda.

Winning percentage is all that matters to me.

    Go JACKETS! THWG!

Well let's all celebrate. Pandering to their audience in the doldrums of the offseason.

Pretty much what Jim's been saying all along.... Johnson can coach but he doesn't recruit well enough to get over the hump at GT, though I'd add in making some dumbass hires.

Some of the recruiting issue no doubt is due to stuff like not having a recruiting support staff until last year due to budget, GT academics, being in SEC country, limited budget to hire assistants, etc.

On the other hand some of it you can control more..... like just doing a better job selling and raising your energy leve1. Or otherwise just finding a way to get er done.

Doubt we'll ever be in the top half of the ACC in recruiting but IMO we Should -at least -be middle of the pack.

To add it will be interesting to see if Roof/Pelton combined with maturation of Owens & Speed as recruiters and the new recruiting support staff (Joe Ham et al) can make a difference. Might not be soon enough to save Johnson's arse. Without a 2007 style class to smooth over the transition to a new coach it will probably be an ugly long term rebuilding.

Not at all sold on Johnson as our coach but imo the best thing for Tech football will be that he figure out recruiting fast and win some more games next year. Dont think he will though. I say 7-5 and a pink slip for Johnson.

The conventional wisdom is that Fedora is the guy to get it done.

What are their measurements for talent?
Like how do they determine what teams have the most talent? Are they relying on recruiting services? Which ones?
I don't see this big talent discrepancy. The only time I felt out talented last year was against Clemson.

This makes me feel even worse about what is going on during the game.
