I've seen a lot of dissatisfaction with Coach Johnson expressed in threads on this board. But, is this the right time to judge him as unacceptable? Johnson has been our head coach for six seasons. Compare his record over those years with Frank Beamer's record for his first six years at Virginia Tech and you will find that Beamer's record is much worse. Beamer went on to be very successful. Johnson has made mistakes and bad choices for DC. But, given the difficulties of recruiting at GT and of hiring coaches at substandard salaries, how likely is it that he would have a better record of wins?
I'll go ahead and end this thread.
-foggy: This idiot of a head coach needs to go now! He's terrible and I could get us to at least 9 wins. 7-5 is what we might get to with this POS and that will be a stretch. Fire him!
-Yukonwreck: You know, the best we can hope for next year is 3-9. That's the cold hard truth. I think we should just go ahead and drop down to FCS and even if we did that we probably wouldn't be elite with this head coach.
-Ramblinwreck92: we need to get rid of this guy and his stupid offense. I mean, our QB gets hurt every play. How can you go through a season and your QB gets hurt every single play? This stupid offense.
What I find somewhat fascinating is that many will raise the same question as the OP, yet just as many, it seems, think we should get rid of CBG after 2 3/4 years (one of which was without a home court and this one with pretty serious injury issues).
And I don't buy the "football requires more numbers" baloney. It is all relative.
But yes, we should without doubt be judging CPJ at this point. Not saying he should be fired or not, I am probably not a good judge of that because I simply go by results on the field. At a LOT of schools, he would have been fired after this last year, but I believe he will be here at least 2 more years.
I think it's fair to judge CPJ now, esp. since he's got a couple of seasons of 'nothing but his recruits' in place to judge by.
I don't think it's likely that he'd have a better record of wins with different coaching or recruiting. "Not having a 2-minute offense", for example, wouldn't change regardless of talent nor coaches hired under him. 'Run the WR Reverse Option from your own 15 in the 4th qtr of a bowl game' would probably still occur too.
The guy's an overrated coach.
