Guys, what do you think of this?
I've kind of started a little personal project, knowing it will take a few years to complete which kind of makes it more fun.
I'm starting to collect helmets for every NFL team autographed by a Tech alum. I've got 2 down and 30 to go, those 2 being Bay Bay Thomas (Broncos) and Daryl Smith (Jags). To be honest I knew it'd be difficult. While Tech has produced a player for almost, if not every, NFL team, it's harder to find autographed merchandise from them. And, you run into situations where you have to choose: Do I want Drew Hill on a Falcons helmet or Keith Brooking?
One huge problem I'm seeing is cost: How can I get a Daryl Smith helmet for less than the cost of a mini helmet itself, but a Gary Guyton Pats/Dolphins helmet runs $85 bucks in some cases. And, Calvin helmets range from $75-200. It's almost impossible to find 'em for less than $100.
Anyway, whaddya think? Silly or fun? I think it'll be kind of cool to have a Man Cave complete with something like this....
I think that's pretty cool, especially if they are full sized helmets. You could put them in a man cave behind a full bar on a single shelf in a line about 6 feet up on the wall across an entire wall with some canned lights on them, that'd be a really cool piece for a man cave.
I think it's a great idea. I actually like that it's mini helmets too. I know the full sized ones look more impressive, but once you get over 10, they are going to be harder to display. And, don't know if you're married, but it'll be easier for your wife to NOT complain about the amount of money you spend on them, or the space they take up, Man Cave or not. Remember it's her house, she just lets you live there, and pay for it!
Hah, I am married. We're buying a house this year (In a condo now, with a baby AND a dog!), and she's already wanting us to get a basement.....presumably for me to put most of my stuff. It's harder to actually GET to the end point than it is to think of a good way to display them but I still need to think of a decent display. Luckily for me, I'm pretty damned frugal, so I've set a very conservative budget per player. I'm pretty sure my most expensive ones will be Calvin's and Pat Swilling, both around $100.
