Did anyone know that the Cover 2 defense was developed on the Flats during Bud Carson's tenure at GT?
COVER 2 DEFENSE: A GENERAL PRIMER |
Pretty cool that one of the foundations of modern defenses originated here. Bud Carson's influence with the Cover 2 was also directly responsible for another popular defense, the Tampa 2 developed by Tony Dungy.
Kinda neat that GT has been a place where top offensive/defensive minds have honed their coaching chops.
GT has had some notable coaches in it's history, for sure.
In his time, Bud Carson was one of the best NFL defensive coaches around.
In the past GT football has often been JUST GOOD ENOUGH TO BREAK YOUR HEART!
I believe we are on the way to getting where we all want to be - Win Championships, and be more competitive with UGa and Bowl Games.
QB's looking up, WR's coming along(?), Welcome CTR, CMP and new AD, We have some good recruiters with a good class coming, Stamps back to ST's, all 3 phases should be better this year than last. We have team speed to match anyone we play.
What's not to like?
Carson was a really good defense coach. But, he did not get it done as a head coach.
Needed a personality implant - not a transplant, an implant.
Not liked at all by very many of us who played for him, especially toward the end where he was feeling the pressure. He never, ever "got" MaTech, not even at the 25th Sun Bowl reunion. Closest I ever saw him act human was at Smylie Gebhart's funeral.
"I can't believe I'm actually related to this old fool."
Good friend of mine was HS buddy of Mike Wysong, Atlanta HS QB legend. Never understood why Carson didn't use Wysong more on offense, waited until the end of his senior year. Caught TD pass vs UGA in 1970, as you well know. In any event, Mike was a very good DB at Tech, RIP.
Not sure of dates but we ran the cover two in high school in early sixties and late fifties.HB covered the same and so did corners and lbs.We also did a Wheel pass defense with corners playing run and everybody rotating backwards.
My Goodness,Frank would have been tremendous..I know Dodd would have voted for him since Ray Graves had gone to Fla.Broyles did well at Sooeytown but he was a great coach and wished we had him. Many folks not happy with Carson hiring and we didnt do that well with Bud. Frank would have been a good man to carry on the tradition...
I thought I heard somewhere that Dodd actually advised Broyles to stay in Fayetteville. Broyles had a great gig, the only team in the whole state, and he ran his own show. Dodd was going to be a tough act to follow for anyone. No one will ever know, but I kinda think Broyles would have come off as something like "Bobby Dodd Lite". Good, but just not quite as good.
Read somewhere too that Carson was not Dodds choice but Frank was but Dodd got the feeling that they didnt want to have another Dodd and went elsewhere. Not sure since nobody has actually told exactily what happened but Frank would have kept the tradition of winning going.Hell he was backfield coach for years.
