Alabama, after oversigning by 10 recruits in February, began the winnowing process yesterday by booting four players charged with felonies against fellow students. It has to be the only college in the universe that includes on its list of potential vacancies, in addition to graduation, flunk outs, transfers and burnouts a line of "anticipated felony charges". Damn clever, that Saban.
It is smart. If you know you're going to have attrition, plan for it.
Saban has actually run a pretty clean program. This incident is actually pretty rare for them, due to Saban's disciplinary standards.
They won the Fulmer cup the first year he was there, but have been pretty good since then.
Of course, it does help them with their oversigning issue, but that's a separate matter.
All schools know that they will have a percentage (Plus or Minus) every year and are smart to plan for it.
To add to my earlier post: I'm sure Saban figured kids would get in trouble, but not to this magnitude. These kids have actually been kicked out of the university. That doesn't usually happen to most football players that lose their scholarships.

The problem with over signing isn't cases like this. Unless of course you count the fact, as previously mentioned, that schools would even prepare for felony's. The problem is the stories we've all heard from kids of being strong armed into transferring, taking medical hardships, or leaving the team.
