The ACC at the NFL Combine

With all this talk going around about GT winning more games because we play in a crappy conference, I thought I'd drop this here.

The SEC has sent the most players to the NFL combine, of course, with 79 players in attendance. No surprise there. However, the ACC is in second place, having sent 43 players to the combine. For a ****ty conference, we sure have a lot of NFL talent.

FSU, Clemson, GT and VT all won their bowl games last year. That's 4 - 0 with the top tie ins. The only losses were Duke and NC State. The two newcomers, Syracuse and Pitt split. That's a 5 - 3 post season record.

    The SEC was 6 - 3.

Conferences with parity, like the ACC, rarely have teams highly ranked because they play most of their games against each other and the records suffer. Conferences that are top heavy, like the SEC, have gimmes against the bottom tier of their conference.

I know the SEC has tiers, too, but the top tier is so much ahead of the second and third tiers, they have more gimme's than say the top tier in the ACC which is much closer to it's second tier.

All that said, I'm not trying to build a case that the ACC is anywhere near the SEC. Just pointing out that talent gaps within conferences plays a big part in w/l record and w/l record is the main tool in the rankings.

Last bowl season was a good one, but it was not typical and, let's be honest, FSU got a gimme. But overall it was what we'd all like to be commonplace. Even Duke and NC State played tough in their losses. When we start doing that year in and year out, and in BCS bowls and not Acme Used Car Bowl, then we will have something--and we'll have a more lucrative TV package.

Only two teams finished in the top 25. Must be some really bad coaches in the ACC if we have so many great players.

The SEC has way more talent than the ACC. The NFL draft combine is a skewed viewpoint, imo. The NFL can only invite jr's and sr's to the combine. Given that small subset of all collegiate players, the ACC still gets waxed by the SEC. But in that regard, the ACC does compare favorably to the other conferences.

I think something not illuminated by the NFL combine is the talent disparity between the SEC and everybody else wrt college freshmen and sophomores. The SEC has more underclassmen ready to compete than it's fellow conferences, and it's not close. Some play as underclassmen and some wait their turn because there's equal or better talent ahead of them. (The stockpile effect - this effect gives the SEC the edge late in the season and in the post season as they can replace injured players with little to no drop off much better than any other conference.) This combined with the obvious disparity between jr's and sr's give the SEC a huge edge in talent in deciding the outcome of college football games.

That said, the ACC is much closer in talent a quality football to the other conferences than they are given credit.

Seems to me, a lot of talent on defense is wasted throughout the conference. Offense probably receives an overall grade of B+ or A-, but a good defense is hard to find. VPI has had em in the past, but didn't produce too terribly many pros. They've dropped off significantly. F$U was better under Stoops, but their talent was better than their production (look for their D to drop off a little now that he's gone). Other than those two.....mediocre, crummy and awful can describe a lot of 'em.
