This is a discussion on We can't compete within the Georgia Tech Football forums, part of the Georgia Tech Sports Message Boards category; I know this has been discussed a lot, but it just made me realize again... why are we even discussing ...
I know this has been discussed a lot, but it just made me realize again... why are we even discussing anything else, like depth charts, and QB competitions, and defensive coordinators, and such when none of it matters due to the way CFB is a rigged game.
Oversigning Index
We would probably be at the very bottom of this list. And, we should be because it's the right thing to do. It's a shame, and should be a crime, that programs are rewarded for doing wrong things. It would be so simple to fix. I'm not going to go into it because it's been said, everybody knows it already, and I'm just thoroughly disgusted and fed up. Some are going to agree, a few are going to say "we should be doing it too" and bla, bla, bla. But, whatever, the point is nothing else we discuss here matters because of this crap.

Never have been fan of oversigning at all.See no need for it but if NCAA allows it we have two choices either follow the bamas etc or play with what we have and for me...........lets play with what we have and see how good we can be by following the rules.Seven wins plus every year and good solid fundamental football with good looking unis is all we can ask for. Just my opinion but dont see us competeing for NC with other teams signing twice what we do every year and running folks off.
College Football and Basketball are out of control. It's up to the individual schools and conferences to right the ship or it will sink to the bottom with no donations and no fans. If things do not change soon ,by recruiting players that can compete in the class room and on the field, the stadiums, coliseums, and pavillions will be empty with no TV or radio coverage.
Another solution would be for colleges to have football programs where the players do not have to be students. Players could be students if they wished and could have scholarships if that was what they wanted. An UGA grad suggested this approach during a conversation years ago. If this approach were adopted, we would always be competitive in football. College football teams could be seen as farm teams or minor leagues where players are developed for the pros.
Bama has always been king of this. Didn't ole Bear have 300 players on the sidelines, so everyone else couldn't have em? It's hot garbage certainly. One of the reasons Dodd pulled Tech out of the SEC I believe.
3 things the NCAA MUST do, or the college athletics bubble WILL burst:
1) Increase academic requirements for 1-A football and basketball.
2) Enforce the 25/85 rule, and punish schools by cutting scholarships. End loopholes like the grayshirt.
3) Gotta do something about the criminal element in athletics. It's disgusting, and ruins things. Let the NFL/NBA deal with that crap.
I love CPJ's proposed solution: Let the kid sign anytime he wants after his junior year. (That will end the commitment nonsense), and if the kid signs then he counts toward your 85 scholarships for 4 years no matter what else happens, injury, flunk out, prison, whatever. That will put the onus on the school to recruit not just quality players, but quality young men. It would also be very easy to police. So simple - yet mankind will figure out a way to do it a crappier way anyway.

The NCAA can solve a lot of this problem by moving the 85 limit date up to NSD instead of the start of fall camp. That way if you have bad luck and a guy doesn't make grades or gets arrested between NSD and fall camp, you're screwed but you should be for recruiting such risky individuals in the first place.

If in pursuit of your destination, you plunge ahead, heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp... What's the use of knowing True North?"
