    Roof's contract and Johnson's odds

The AJC reports today that Ted Roof got a $550,000 annual contract plus incentives to become defensive coordinator, a $200,000+ increase over Al Groh. And SB Nation consults its "experts" -- take it all with salt -- and figuring on a 6-6 season, tries to determine what the odds are for any coach getting fired after 2013. Johnson's chances after a 6-6 season is 70.8%. While I think they are slightly better than that it's not a bad guess. Friends and foes agree he has to win this year. As for Roof, seems to me GT and Johnson have ponied up big time to put the DC in the top tier of ACC coordinators. Now he has to produce. The two items are not unrelated, I think. Should we assume that the new AD though not yet on board signed off on the deal?

    Agreed!

We win 9 games this year, I believe.
In the past GT football has often been JUST GOOD ENOUGH TO BREAK YOUR HEART!

I believe we are on the way to getting where we all want to be - Win Championships, and be more competitive with UGa and Bowl Games.

QB's looking up, WR's coming along(?), Welcome CTR, CMP and new AD, We have some good recruiters with a good class coming, Stamps back to ST's, all 3 phases should be better this year than last. We have team speed to match anyone we play.

    What's not to like?

It's time for TR to show his stuff. He has always been a good LB coach and tireless worker.I was not completely on board with this hire, but after giving it some thought, it could be a good one. All the pieces fit. A GT player that has had experience with many different teams. He should give it his all because this is his chance to shine. Everything is in place for him to excel and I am he knows it. I wish him the best of luck. Go Jackets.

looking back, we got what we paid for with al groh, you know? roof's got his hands full, but i think we've got some serious, young talent that--if coached up--can be extremely productive. CAG didn't coach up anyone, unfortunately. thank god he's gone!

i agree. initially, i thought he was a rather safe, lackluster hire. but, i should have known better than to expect something earth-shattering. it wasn't going to happen.

i'm giving CTR my full support. we've got some potential with this D. he just needs to get us schemed so our talent shines instead of squandering it all like CAG did for years.

So Paul Johnson makes over 7 times what Al Groh made, but people want to crucify Groh and not blame Johnson at all for the D? Interesting.

It's CPJ's fault for hiring Groh. It's Groh's fault the defense underperformed it's talent.

Something else about CPJ's salary. We don't pay an OC, CPJ does both HC and OC duties. So maybe you can say he's underpaid as a HC.

oh, he certainly is responsible in terms of the overall health of the program. but, let's not pretend CPJ was running the D--he wasn't. that was CAG's baby. CPJ has always been a hands-off HC. he hires people to do their jobs and doesn't micromanage. i don't think it's a stretch to suggest most coaches would love to work for someone who lets you do your job unfettered. CPJ must be doing something right for coaches to stick with him as they do. unfortunately for all stakeholders, CAG didn't pan out as hoped. i sure don't remember many complaining about his hire years ago. his head coaching record, yeah. but, as a DC he had overwhelming support from the fanbase from my recollection. if we'd only known then what we know now! such is life.

here's hoping roof isn't a flop. if he is, it very well could be the end of CPJ on the flats unless our O is "auburn-esque" of 2010 in the coming years.
