Ted Roof glad to be back at Tech | www.ajc.com
I especially liked this part:
and this, as well:Soon, Roof will have decisions to make on how he’ll align players recruited to play in a 3-4 defense into his scheme, which has used the 4-3 as its base, but will diversify itself to take on the wide range of offenses Tech will face.
“Our job as coaches is to get the best group on the field, whoever that is, however that is, whatever the position,” Roof said. “Right now, they’re just X’s. They’re not E’s or T’s or LB’s. They’re all just X’s right now.”
In his one season at Penn State, Roof helped the Nittany Lions finish second in the Big Ten in scoring defense (19.1 points per game) and first in sacks (34) in a season in which the cloud of Joe Paterno and Jerry Sandusky hung over the team.

If in pursuit of your destination, you plunge ahead, heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp... What's the use of knowing True North?"

I like this hire. Call me a sentimental sap (which I'll readily admit I am), but I like this hire.

I'm coming around I think. Always trusted that he'd improve our recruiting, but reading this gets me a little more excited. Groh stunk, and all reports are that he didn't prepare the D for the next opponent very well. I just hope Ted has improved his playcalling since he was here the first time. We DO have talent on D, and a move to the 4-3 should showcase it a little better.
Having a "home" guy could be really helpful. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but maybe having a guy who the kids know has walked their path - playing football at the major college level AND doing so while taking some of the same classes at the same school they're at - will be good for connecting with the kids and fostering the right attitude within the team.
After Al .......will take Ted and hope he gets it together. We all know that on defense if u are aggressive you can out hit and out hustle mistakes.I think Ted is good recruiter and a Tech man and really pulling for him.Gosh just to have a aggressive defense that will hit you would be so nice to see in action on the flats.
I hope you 4 - 3 guys aren't sorely disappointed when we end up playing 3 man fronts a lot of the time. Roof has been specifically nonspecific about what formation we'll use. His buzz word is "multiple." Well, guess what... we were multiple under Groh, too.
The thing that excites me about Roof's philosophy is his commitment to being aggressive, stressing fundamentals and prioritization of stopping the run, pressuring the passer, and covering the deep ball.

Agreed. Scheme isn't terribly important to me (no, seriously).
Most everyone at this level of coaching understands the schematic stuff. The questions are: can they teach their kids to play football? Can they put the best guys in the best position to play?
It seems like Roof is after that sort of stuff, and not just winning the chalkboard battle.
