If CCK gets the DC position, will he definitely stick with the 3-4, or is there any chance he goes with the 4-3? Personally I'm not convinced it really matters that much, just curious.

less concerned with 3 - 4 vs 4-3 than the personnel used to play the game.
I don't think the 3-4 vs 4-3 is nearly as important as the KISS schemes. With the limited practice hours, the nuances of NFL scheming is almost impossible.Quote:

It was great to win and to have defensive showing like that but keep it in perspective. USC wasn't exactly playing for the NC. This is a very good question and one that I have been struggling with myself. Although we just had a very good defensive showing, I still feel a change may be needed. I guess, in the end, it depends on the personnel we have in the pipe line. If we look down the roster and see the potential to run the 3-4 with it, then so be it. There is a benefit to continuity. All the kids are familiar with what we are doing now.
Somehow we are going to have to construct a DL that is effective. The Sun Bowl was their best showing, but it was still not a dominant effort by any means. Watching the rest of bowl games illustrates that quite well. We got a little push, but we weren't beating any blockers and blowing things up in the backfield. We batted down passes. That is what we did. Against the run, we were quite sound, which was good, and forced them to beat us through the air on a windy day.
We will be replacing Cross and Barnes. What will be the strengths and limitations of those new kids? I really don't know. This topic deserves a lot of discussion.

"All the kids are familiar with what we are doing now"--plus they have the last 6 quarters as evidence to themselves that they can be and effective defense in the 3-4 against fairly decent offenses. Self confidence is almost always an advantage. I have a hunch part of the problem while Al Groh was here was that the players never fully understood the system/philosophy and had little confidence that they could be successful in the 3-4. Kudos to Coach Kelly for getting them to buy in.
