Rock Perdoni, Bubba Hoats, and Rick Lewis (and a question)

Guys, when I was a sophomore 'way back in the fall of 1968, UGAG hammered us 47-8. After the season ended, we recruited three guys - Rock Perdoni, a consensus JUCO All-American defensive tackle; Bubba Hoats, an All-American DB; and Rick Lewis, another highly regarded defensive back.

The next fall we shut out Georgia 6-0 (the first time in Dooley's career that he had been shut out, up to that point). We beat them again the next season, 17-7.

I had classes with all three of these guys, and they were bona fide students, btw.

Here's the question: I know that was back in the Dark Ages, but have things changed so much that we can't recruit at the JUCO level at all any more? Maybe to find that ONE Rock Perdoni out there to fill a gap for a couple of years, as he did? Has the Hill put an end to that?

Figure one of you guys will know, would appreciate your thoughts.

OGB, those names brought up some fond memories of the past. Outstanding football players and very good friends. I too have wondered why we don't recruit JC's more. With so many programs playing football now I guess the pool of players is less deep than it was back in the day. Are you sure you ever saw those guys in class?

Hoats had 3 INTs in that 6-0 win in 1969. Great win for the Jackets.

Most JUCO credits do not transfer into Tech. This is the main reason

The only Pre-Engineering JUCO in Georgia that fielded a football team that couldv'e been a feeder program, shut down its program.

It does because they have majors like "undecided". Yes, I jest, but basically anything can transfer to something at georgia. The NCAA has a rule that essentially requires a student athlete to be "on track to graduate" that takes their year in school and expects that % of credits towards their degree to be fulfilled. If you come in as a sophomore/junior from a JC and have 0% towards your degree, you're instantly ineligible. So we could get someone, but they'd be instantly ineligible the day class started.

"Rock Perdoni". That name brings back some memories. His last year was my freshman year. Coach Bestwick on Rock: "He's not big enough to play that position, but he doesn't know it."

Just this person's opinion but I think now, as I thought back then, Rock Perdoni was the best DL to have ever put on the Tech uniform. That is not meant as a slight to all the other great DL that have played at Tech, but I do believe he is the only consensus All American we have had.
