Lack of Special Teams = Lack of Special Seasons

Say what you want about Mark Bradley, but he nailed this one concerning our special teams (our lack of a special teams coach is debatable):

Once again: Tech's Johnson lacks a special brand of expertise | Mark Bradley

I know special teams have cost us a few games this seasons, and the Sun Bowl was a microcosm of all that was wrong with our STs this year: Inability to bring the returner down, poor returns to give our team a field position advantage, and lost points on easy field goals. Had we made one of the 3 field goals that were missed yesterday, we'd have a bunch of threads praising the football gods "the streak" is finally over...as it stands, there's a bunch of "woe is us" threads. We should have 2 more wins (Utah, Virginia) if our special teams was special and not "special".

Glad I wasn't on here during the game yesterday...yeesh...

Same as it's been for the past few years isn't it? When will we correct this?! How long will it take? Some of the players I see running around on ST make me cringe.

Unfortunately, Helluva. I'm not sure how many times CPJ has to get his hands burned on special teams before he realizes it's not a good idea to touch that hot special teams plate.

I noticed one GT to Utah kick yesterday where the Utah player caught the ball, at least two GT tacklers went to their right as the Utah returner fielded the ball, when the Utah ballcarrier was already to their left. Utah continued to his right, RIGHT PAST the two GT defensive players.

For anyone who watches the replays, please tell me that I am wrong, but I don't think so.
In the past GT football has often been JUST GOOD ENOUGH TO BREAK YOUR HEART!

I believe we are on the way to getting where we all want to be - Win Championships, and be more competitive with UGa and Bowl Games.

QB's looking up, WR's coming along(?), Welcome CTR, CMP and new AD, We have some good recruiters with a good class coming, Stamps back to ST's, all 3 phases should be better this year than last. We have team speed to match anyone we play.

    What's not to like?

Why do we need 2 OL coach and not one ST coach?
DCS: "I'll give Helluva the nod on this one."

12 out of 13. When will this stop?

Bobby Godd never, not once, ever blamed his boys for a loss. It was always on his shoulders, and his shoulders alone. That is greatness. This is not. --YukonWreck

What we need is for DRad to lay the law down to PJ to get rid of some of his has been assistants and get real assistants in who know the game. Start getting rid of those assistants and the first to go should be GROH!

You can get away with not having a special teams coordinator if you assistants can coach special teams but when you have assistants who can't coach special teams then you have to either bring in a special teams coordinator who is then held accountable or you have to fire some of your position coaches who are doubling as special teams coaches 'cause they have to be able to both coach their position and coach a special teams unit.

This bottom line is that keeping things status quo like Paul Johnson has done the past 4 years when his special teams have been awful is poor management and absolutely unacceptable. To be fair it is the same type crap that we used to criticize Chan Gailey.

Georgia Tech does not need a special teams coordinator. They need a kicker and punter that can both boom the ball and do it accurately. Couple that with a dangerous return man and all of a sudden you have great special teams. One thing I don't understand is why guys like Tony Zenon aren't given more of a chance to return kicks and punts. I am glad they finally put Jemea returning punts, but we need someone who teams do not want to kick to. A special teams coach does not know the fine arts of punting and kicking. Most of those guys have their own "special" coaches. Think of it as a swing coach in golf.

CPJ might need to use a consultant on helping his eye for talent concerning kickers though. He hasn't had much success in picking them.
