Some Coaches Just Don't Get It

Apparently Tennessee HC Derek Dooley is taking pettiness to another level:

    Dooley limiting Arnett’s options | timesfreepress.com

I can understand making an SA sit out a year for transferring, or to block an SA from transferring within a conference, but to punish an SA for 2 years is ridiculous! If Arnett chooses to go Michigan or Michigan State, he would have to sit out through NCAA transfer rules, but those schools could not offer him a scholarship to attend those schools for two years! The greatest head scratcher is that UT does not play Michigan or Michigan State in the future! For someone that got a great education at UVA and has a law degree, Derek Dooley is completely clueless and just looks small on this one. This isn't the first time he's done this, as he also did it with an Offensive Linemen last year and a highly recruited RB that Lane Kiffin signed.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been a class action law suit against the NCAA to challenge this rule. Afterall, all schollys are just guaranteed for just 1 year, but potentially punishes an SA for 2 years! On top of that, it also limits your athletic options which could be 25-50% of your college athletic career. Imagine if your company says if we hire you, but you decide to go to another company, we can dictate which company you're allowed to work at, and you won't be allowed to work for them until 25-50% of your working career is over. Non-compete clauses for multi-million/billion dollar companies are less restrictive than the NCAA transfer rules.

GT fans know we've had our fair share of transfers, but I can't remember one instance where CPJ doesn't say "We're going to do what's right for so-and-so...we'll do everything we can to help him out." And that's the way it should be for SAs that work hard and represent your program the right way.

I hope Dooley shapes up and let's the kid go wherever he wants (outside of the SEC)...of course, he might not be there to do something this stupid much longer...

UT are the bastards here. Not releasing a kid to be near his sick dad because they "recruit" against Michigan or Michigan State. As I understand it, UT could basically not object and Arnett could go play at Michigan or Michigan State next year with an NCAA medical hardship waiver (like AA did to play for us).

It's all about the money and not about the kids. Duh.

I still despise the NCAA.... organize a new D1 football / basketball conference outside the NCAA. Unfair, arbitrary and capricious is the way the NCAA rules can work.

The golden boy done did it again:

Tennessee’s Derek Dooley parts ways with another Georgia football recruit | AJC College Sports Recruiting

For a guy that likes to project the image of a classy football coach, and gentleman, he sure is acting like a dirty scumbag. Of course he was weened under Saban so that's not too shocking. Now assistant coaches are bailing on that sinking ship (two assistants have announced they're leaving UT for Washington!). It may be that Dooley is doing Imani Cross and the latest recruit he "cut" a favor in the end.

Henderson sounds like a CPJ type of guy: “I thought it was a bunch of crap. I guess if Tennessee is out there looking for other linebackers, then I can go find another place to go. Tennessee is where I wanted to go, and that’s where I’ve been loyal to ever since June. But it is what it is.

Dooley's going to ruin that program. Shouldn't be surprising though. He was a failure at Louisiana Tech and has a losing record overall as a head coach.
Richt, Saban, Miles, Muschamp and Petrino are going to out-recruit and out-coach him as long as he's there.

WOW...Dooley just told ANOTHER recruit it might be better if he looked elsewhere...a WR from Georgia that's been committed to UT since this summer, Keith Redding. DaRick Rogers, their best WR, just tweeted tonight: "So many recruits lost today ... wish I could tell you otherwise fellas .. but that's whats goin on here ..."

Dooley's ship is sinking FAST in Knoxville...there's smoke that Rogers is looking to transfer out, but Dooley will probably put all kinds of stips on his release like he did with Arnett. The administration needs to find his replacement soon or else Vanderbilt will pass them by with what James Franklin is doing there.
