• Paul Johnson Post-Game Quotes - UNC

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets scored a hard-fought 28-20 victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Head coach Paul Johnson addressed the media after the game.

    Opening Statement

I’m really proud of our team especially in the second half. We didn’tstart out too well and you have to give North Carolina credit becausethey came out and played really hard on both sides of the ball. Theydid a good job of getting the lead, but I thought the momentumchanged when we were able to take that last drive right before halfand go down and score. That cut it to one score and we knew that wewere getting the ball first. And once we got the lead we found arenewed energy and we played a lot better defensively and offensivelyfor that matter.”

    On the offense’s slow start

That first series we missed a couple of guys that were open or we didn’tmake the play. And like I said, there weren’t a lot of possessionsand in a game like that you have to maximize it. And we stillstruggle running the option. We’re not very good at it to be quitehonest with you. We’ve got to get a lot better at it than where weare right now, but we made enough plays to win.”

Did you take advantage of opportunities to sway the momentum?

At times. We got a couple breaks as well. The holding call on the longtouchdown pass was huge. Once we got the ball back before the lastdrive, I thought we could have taken control of the game there andscored. But we ended up in a third and long and I wanted to get thefirst down, but I also wanted to get the ball back in the center ofthe field because the field goal was going to put the game out ofreach. And Vad made a great play to pick up the first down aftergetting a nice block from David [Sims] and the rest of the guys setthe edge. So we didn’t have to do that.”

On the defensive performance in the 2nd half

We did a better job of keeping them off the board. And they worked intandem as the offense did a nice job of holding on to the ball. Andas for Renner, the defensive staff made some good adjustments athalftime and in the second half. I also thought Jeremiah [Attaochu]turned it up a notch in the second half. He was really applying somepressure off the edge and got a couple of holding calls.

Did the weather give you an advantage?

I don’t think anyone has an advantage when it rains like that. If youhad a power running team, they might have a power advantage. But they[North Carolina} throw the ball around a lot and we handle the ball alot. So it was tough for both offenses to do what they like to do. Iknow it was tough throwing the ball.

On Dominique Noble and Demond Smith’s perfomance

They stepped up and played big. They played pretty much the whole gameafter losing both of our other safeties early. We also lost Quayshawn[Nealy] in the first series. So we had a couple of true freshmen outthere banging and the moment wasn’t too big for them. They steppedup and played. And that’s why we recruited them.

Did you consider kicking a field goal before going for it on 4th down trailing 13-0?

No.If we can’t gain half a yard, then were probably not going to win.And the way that game was looking at that time, field goals weren’tto do any good.”

i'm really concerned about injuries on D. and, we can't afford to lose golden on STs. i don't trust zenon. i think you mentioned jemea, cheese. we had him back for return in the past. we need to do it again. he's got the ball skills and attitude for it if golden's out.

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy - YouTube Paul Davis theme song?

The D was my biggest concern going into yesterday and became bigger. Not against VT, but against Miami. We need to heal up a lot in the next two weeks.

The singer Paul Davis was a friend of mine. Quiet, shy, nothing he liked to do more than to go fishing or play with his recording equipment. Nothing he hated more than to fly in an airplane.

      RIP Paul....

It quite surprising the songs your friend wrote. Quite a collection.

Patrick, there was one thing I heard that he liked as much as fishing and playing with his recording equipment... playing golf. Couple friends I played golf with played with him and evidently he was somewhat of a golf fanatic.

He did like playing golf, and he was good at it, but complained that golf attracted more people than was to his liking, and he preferred as few people as possible.
