• Georgia Tech Defense Makes Strides Against Duke

The Jackets will look to improve on their defensive effort against the Tar Heels this weekendAfter watching some spring clips, I thought the talk of Roof "simplifying everything!!!!" was a little overblown.

Against Duke, though, it was true. We were as vanilla as we've been in years. Base 4-3, some Cover 2, some Cover 3, a little Man. Not a ton of blitzing. We loosened up a little in the 2nd half but, for the most part it was just a case of us lining up and hitting the guy in front of us.

I liked it as a way of taking on an option team. We were getting pushed around in the middle early on, but we did a good job of staying on our assignments. We never looked like we got befuddled by any formations (like we did last year). We stayed on our run fits for the most part...not perfect on that, I noticed Nealy playing out of position a few times particularly, but definitely better. Pass coverage looked about as good as you can expect.

Gotsis and Hunt-Days obviously played well, but I think Watts was another guy who had a good game, just more quietly. Jemea Thomas is playing with a ton of confidence.

In the end, it was still Duke. I like their commitment to their game plan on offense, but they just lack the players right now to make much happen. Their running back Crowder had a little burst and their line is obviously well-coached, but there wasn't too much else. Hard to draw too much from that game for that reason, but it was nice to watch.

I agree stylee, the defense just played straight up and the players were playing faster. I will also add..

Roof must have made adjustments, 'cause Duke was running straight at the defense and then they changed up and went away from it. Can we assume that Roof plugged the hole and made Duke do something else?

The 3-4/Georgia Tech match was the worst match since O.J. Simpson and his wife Nicole.

the hiring of CAG brought about the "dark ages" of this defense. talk about squandering talent? he did a damn good job of making sure of that with his intricate schemes and expecting to groom 4-3 linemen for a 2-gap 3-4 we had ZERO business running. a quarter-way through last year it was obvious not only did his scheme suck but his deep rooted knowledge was being easily outwitted by the likes of MTSU and no-huddle Os.

CTR gets it. it's better to simplify and put guys in a position to make plays instinctively rather than neuter them with knowledge overload. now we'll actually get to see guys fly to the ball and play football. about time!

I remember talking to a couple GT defenders the spring after Groh was hired. I asked them how it was going and they told me that Groh had them watch a lot of film on the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. They kinda rolled their eyes and looked puzzled about the whole thing..

Well Al is gone and thankfully so is the read and react defense he preaches. Its good for the pros but Tech is not in the NFL ...yet.We played agressive defense vs Dook but we did get run on and no matter what technique you use or gap you cover .....that aint good.I think though its more of a lack of bulk rather than ability so look forward to the NC contest .We need to let kids be kids and just hit somebody.Watched LSU this weekend and........no matter what set they were in on the defensive side of the ball they just knock hell out of you and enjoy it.We need same philosophy.

Really interesting to hear that. I drank the Groh KoolAid though.
