• Has Georgia Tech Football Improved?

Georgia Tech is off to an expected 2-0 start this season, so what have we learned? These areas stand out to me: the offensive line has been crisper this early season than we've seen in the past, the GT defensive players refreshingly look like they know where they are going, and the kicking game looks remarkably like it has always looked under Paul Johnson.

Personally, I'd prefer playing a better opponent the first few weeks to know where the team stands, but that will happen this week against North Carolina.

What we do know is that the Georgia Tech wide receivers have to do a better job catching the football than they have done so far this season. There's athletic talent at the position, but it means nothing when Vad Lee's passes are dropped. GT under Paul Johnson likes to recruit rangy wide receivers who can run, how 'bout adding the ability to catch the football to the job description?

Duke's offense was a bad match-up for Georgia Tech when they ran the football right at the Jackets. That is a scary thought, that the lowly Blue Devils are able to handle the Jackets in between the tackles. Fortunately, the Blue Devils coaches went away from the power and decided to play "Peek-a-Boo" football. That played right into Georgia Tech's defensive quickness.

Whether or not Ted Roof will be a better defensive coordinator on The Flats than Al Groh remains to be seen. Although most avid GT fans will tell you that any coach would be an improvement based on the production we saw on the defensive side of the ball the past few years.

What I like about Roof is that he looks like a contemporary football coach who is really into the game. Groh looked more like the door man at a mortuary, or an undertaker on steroids.

What do you like about this year's Georgia Tech football team?

These are the differences this year. I probably should mention the kicking game too, but I just don't ever give that much thought. I suppose I will if it wins us a close one this year.

Defense is the biggest one. It's still not proven, but it has shown a lot of signs for hope. Right now, I think it can give us 2 more wins.

The offense has been great already. But, if a team is just whipping us at the point of attack, it could be stimmied. Vad Lee will allow our offense to compete even if the other team can physically dominate our blocking. That could prove to get us an extra win or two. BUT, I'm not sure Vad is running the meat and potatoes of the offense as efficiently as Tevin yet, which could end up costing us a game this year.

I would not put the D ahead of Vad quite yet. The D is still a big concern for me at least.

As Jim said, Duke ran at will early on and then all of a sudden stopped. Can't recall if we adjusted or if they just started passing. DL still a big concern. Where has Attachou been?

The one thing I'd definitely disagree with is that the kicking game is much improved over most of the time under CPJ. The fact that kickoffs routinely reach the endzone on kickoffs is huge. The fact that we have a freshman with a leg that can even make a 50 yarder is huge. I know he shanked one badly, but the block I'm not sure who was at fault. He's a TFr and will improve, but he's already surpassed on kickoffs, which was absolutely awful for both our STs and Defense in trying to cover for before.

Duke's DLine was 3 SRs and a JR - those guys were seasoned (yes it's Duke) and should represent the relative strength of a good chunk of our remaining games outside of the big two. Our DLine has huge questions, though.

      Improvements:
1). PASS PROTECTION... first time I have ever seen a complete game of good PP, although I don't think Duke had any animals at DE...but it was still the best I've seen under PJ.
2.) A QB who can make accurate throws in tight windows...Tevin played so timid so many times that it cost him on throwing the ball...he would hesitate so much on passes because he didn't trust his arm to make the throw...occasionally ol' Tev would pull one out of his a$$ and make a good throw but that was few and far between...not trying to bash TW but it does anyone think he could have made that throw to Smelter on that skinny post?
3.) DBs/Pass coverage - we knew this was a good group but from what I could tell the few sacks we got were coverage sacks...the DL got OK pressure but Connette looked like he had no one to throw to and would get sacked eventually due to time...

      The Same
1.) DL pass rush - looked like we are firing off the ball more aggressively which is an improvement, but you can tell we just dont have a monster on the DE or DT spot that just causes havoc, even Sneezy looks like hes getting contained regularly. Although I liked what i saw from Anthony Williams...he was by far most aggressive and effective DL player we had on Saturday, He needs to start in place of Dieke, that guy is huge but plays so soft.
      2) Defense agaisnt the run - For whatever reason we just do not play well with running between the tackles...we dont have a DT that can just stuff the inside run...Duke's most effective plays where the inside handoff from the zone read and was cutting through us like butter in that 1st quarter. Not sure how to improve that unless we play a base 5-2 defense...and take the risk of the pass.

      Worse
1.) Special teams - after Butker's first kick I was thinking holy hell, we finally have a kicker...then my dreams were crushed as we had a shank and a kick right into the back of the OL...our Kick off coverage is still pretty nerve racking, and I know Duke's punter was good, Golden had some opportunities to return and he played it very conservatively, he did have once decent PR though.

We stopped them, they didn't stop themselves. They kept trying the same stuff and failed. We adjusted, CPJ said so. "We simplified, I know you hate to keep hearing that, but that's what we did. We went back to our base stuff."

we did a damn good job of dictating the pace of the game, you know? when you own the TOP and put up points you force the other team's cold and stiff offense to press. i think most of us have forgotten what that's like since we haven't seen it in years, haha! then, you figure they've gotta back up QB in there as well. that's the beauty of having an O that can move the chains instead of a quick 3-and-out putting the D right back on the field to be abused. our O has always been our best D. if it can be that way again this year and we can just get some key stops on D we've gotta shot against the big boys.

Only time will tell if GT FB has improved, but my optimism for our team is MUCH improved from last year.

Gotsis looked pretty good and someone even mentioned he was double teamed a bit. If Attaochu can fix whatever is going on with him the dline might actually be able to get some pressure without bringing numbers. I think most would point out that he's learning a new position but didn't the coaches have him put a hand in the dirt for a good portion of the second half of last season A.G. (After Groh)? He looked to be in on a lot of the running plays or near the action but didn't do anything rushing the passer.

Improvement everywhere in my opinion. It is eraly and hard to get a gauge based on the opponents. It gets progressively tougher which I like. In regards to Butkers' mistakes he looked to me like he was starting his pre-routine a little quick, rushing it a little. I think it can be corrected. He's good.

The question is obscure, but I will clarify. Have we improved in the last ten years? No, we have not.

It was a bad kick, low and left. Would have missed by a bunch.

      Yukon is right. in 2002 and 2003 (ten years ago) we had teams with power rankings of 62-63%. We haven't been that high in the last three years. {Power ranking at J Howell is the probability of beating the average team on a neutral field. NCAA Division IA Football Power Ratings }

Now the average team ain't all that great when there are about 120 teams. So we aren't as good as slightly above average. The only thing that saves us is the curve, e.g. there are a lot of teams out there that are worse and we have played in a weak conference.
