• Kicker Harrison Butker Commits to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson scored his eighth commit in the 2013 recruiting class as Westminster kicker Harrison Buttker gave his verbal today.

The 6-4, 175 pounder nailed sixteen field goals in seventeen attempts this past season, including nine outside forty-one yards. He converted twenty extra points in twenty-two attempts, one missed due to a bad snap.

He also excelled in an area that Georgia Tech has lacked during the Paul Johnson years, having only twelve kick-off attempts returned in fifty-nine kicks. The Westminster kicker also punted thirty-three times for a 39.5 average.

Buttker is rated the number one kicker in the country by 247sports and number three kicker in the country by Rivals

outstanding get. ST's has been such a weakness for us. a kicker of this caliber is just what the doctor ordered.

wouldn't be shocked at all if he's our #1 guy his freshman season.

man, i sweat on every friggin' FG attempt. nothing has been automatic for us the past few years. this kid can flat-out kick a friggin' football! look at him boot those kickoffs outta the endzone time after time. with the new rules moving the spot up, we oughta see the same on the flats in a couple of years. good, good stuff!

As good as he is, he has the potential to be infinitely better in college. The kid is 6'3 and only 180 lbs, so that means he's still getting use to his body and once he starts filling out, his leg will get stronger...especially in college strength program.

Kickers usually don't get offers this early unless they're in the top tier. Colleges like to wait until kickers show more on tape through their senior year. Most kickers will only get preferred walk-on offers, so for a kicker like Butker to get big time offers at the end of his Junior year tells you what class of kicker college programs regard him as.

GT had a great line of kickers going for a while. Hopefully Butker can be the beginning of the next great line of GT kickers...

You can chalk this up to LongforDodd's mother. She and young Mr. Butker's grandmother are very good and long time friends. She put the hard sell on him about a month ago at grandma's house. :-)

Here's a great article that underscores how highly rated his kicking skills are, as well as some personal info on him:

Great!!! This won us an extra game a season. ST have been weak, but CPJ is pulling out all the stops with a new ST coach and landing this kid.

Welcome to GT! Kid has an A average and takes AP courses. Any idea as to his major? Hopefully its one that we are fairly unique in offering.

I love how quick he kicks the FGs. His holder was really good too.

After the last few years of torture on KOs, won't it be nice if that becomes a boring play???

BTW, my wife scooped me on this. I was out and come back and she asks me who the great recruit was that we landed. Great news!!!

Not to worry--we're scoring a touchdown on every possession this year.

I do not mind "wasting" 4 or 5 scholarships on kicker/punters. All teams have quite a few that never play a down. Good recruit and welcome!

How can Butker be rated the best kicker by 247 Sports and third best by Rivals and then receive only two stars from Rivals? I know kickers don't usually get high ratings but he is one of the best in the country.

What happened to the kicker GT signed two years ago? (Poole?) I thought he was highly regarded also.

We now have a Kicker, Punter and Long Snapper on scholarship. We're only signing about 16 guys this year, and one is a kicker? We better have Rodney Williams at P and Sisson/Manget at K, or I'll be really disappointed. Nobody can complain Paul Johnson doesn't care about special teams. He's gone all out.

I've got no problem with his signing of one of the best FG kickers and guy who will kick it out of the end zone on KOs. We are signing a probable 4 year starter. What we have probably lost is another fast AB or person who would most likely fill out the scout team.

I agree that CPJ is showing with actions that he really wants ST to get better.

      But since I have to bitch about something, this means that CPJ will go for it on fourth down less {tongue in cheek}

We signed Justin Moore from Marist and now Butker from Westminster. Will the two cake-eaters from the elite Atlanta area private high schools have the mental toughness it takes to excel at the major college level?

In other words.. will the silver spoons morph into brass balls?

I think there is something to the school of thought that kids from the suburbs "would like to be good" whereas the kids from the inner city "have to be good".

Ever consider going into Republican / Democrat political writing? Enough to keep people in red meat for a while here.

Seeing as we all have our prejudices, let me try and look at the facts instead. How many of the NFL FG kickers are from the inner city would you guess? Now how many of the NFL lineman or running backs are from the inner city?

The kids may or may not work out based on who they are as individuals. All we know is that at the HS level they have excelled. You never know after that. As you have pointed out, many of our star RB / OL/ DL / QB prospects haven't panned out. And they weren't from elite, cake eating, silver spoon, lacking in mental toughness like to be good high schools.

Didn't like the way Justin Moore performed last season and then there's Cooper Taylor from Marist who got soft in the crotch and transferred out. The kids from the rich suburban schools always have options and they often use them. That's what makes their situations different than the inner city kids. They don't need to excel at football to make a living for themselves when football is over. Dad has a business or dad has a lot of money or contacts..

True not many kickers from the inner city 'cept maybe some that are from foreign countries who end up there when their parents move to the states.

Scott Sisson's dad was a Delta pilot and Scott came to GT driving a red Corvette and he worked out well so we'll see..

stonewall, sounds like you subscribe to the "gitter dun" school of football psychology..
