• Kicker Harrison Butker Commits to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson scored his eighth commit in the 2013 recruiting class as Westminster kicker Harrison Buttker gave his verbal today.

The 6-4, 175 pounder nailed sixteen field goals in seventeen attempts this past season, including nine outside forty-one yards. He converted twenty extra points in twenty-two attempts, one missed due to a bad snap.

He also excelled in an area that Georgia Tech has lacked during the Paul Johnson years, having only twelve kick-off attempts returned in fifty-nine kicks. The Westminster kicker also punted thirty-three times for a 39.5 average.

Buttker is rated the number one kicker in the country by 247sports and number three kicker in the country by Rivals

This guy is like the #3 kicker from the 2013 class in the nation, we could use it

looks real good. Should be a 4* kicker. Had a couple of game winners in the video and he can hit them from 50+. I think last year anything over 30 was hard for us

I have been critical of our recruiting, but looking at the 8 we have signed so far there is reason to be optimistic. Kids are picking us over top flight programs and that is a big, big change.

For a guy who was always reluctant to use a scholarship on the unpredictability of kickers, hasn't Johnson now offered three in three years? Maybe the new ST guy will have some influence after all. And while we're at it, offer the holder because the long snapper was not all that accurate.

outstanding get. ST's has been such a weakness for us. a kicker of this caliber is just what the doctor ordered.

wouldn't be shocked at all if he's our #1 guy his freshman season.

man, i sweat on every friggin' FG attempt. nothing has been automatic for us the past few years. this kid can flat-out kick a friggin' football! look at him boot those kickoffs outta the endzone time after time. with the new rules moving the spot up, we oughta see the same on the flats in a couple of years. good, good stuff!

As good as he is, he has the potential to be infinitely better in college. The kid is 6'3 and only 180 lbs, so that means he's still getting use to his body and once he starts filling out, his leg will get stronger...especially in college strength program.

Kickers usually don't get offers this early unless they're in the top tier. Colleges like to wait until kickers show more on tape through their senior year. Most kickers will only get preferred walk-on offers, so for a kicker like Butker to get big time offers at the end of his Junior year tells you what class of kicker college programs regard him as.

GT had a great line of kickers going for a while. Hopefully Butker can be the beginning of the next great line of GT kickers...

You can chalk this up to LongforDodd's mother. She and young Mr. Butker's grandmother are very good and long time friends. She put the hard sell on him about a month ago at grandma's house. :-)

Here's a great article that underscores how highly rated his kicking skills are, as well as some personal info on him:

Great!!! This won us an extra game a season. ST have been weak, but CPJ is pulling out all the stops with a new ST coach and landing this kid.

Welcome to GT! Kid has an A average and takes AP courses. Any idea as to his major? Hopefully its one that we are fairly unique in offering.

I love how quick he kicks the FGs. His holder was really good too.

After the last few years of torture on KOs, won't it be nice if that becomes a boring play???

BTW, my wife scooped me on this. I was out and come back and she asks me who the great recruit was that we landed. Great news!!!

Not to worry--we're scoring a touchdown on every possession this year.

I do not mind "wasting" 4 or 5 scholarships on kicker/punters. All teams have quite a few that never play a down. Good recruit and welcome!

How can Butker be rated the best kicker by 247 Sports and third best by Rivals and then receive only two stars from Rivals? I know kickers don't usually get high ratings but he is one of the best in the country.

What happened to the kicker GT signed two years ago? (Poole?) I thought he was highly regarded also.

We now have a Kicker, Punter and Long Snapper on scholarship. We're only signing about 16 guys this year, and one is a kicker? We better have Rodney Williams at P and Sisson/Manget at K, or I'll be really disappointed. Nobody can complain Paul Johnson doesn't care about special teams. He's gone all out.
