Norcross, Georgia defensive back Anthony Autry became a Yellow Jacket last week when he faxed in his National Letter of Intent.“We are real excited about him,” Georgia Tech defensive back coach Charles Kelly said. “He comes from a great family and to me he was one of the guys that I was most excited about.”
Autry had a stellar senior season, earning first team All-State honors as well as Gwinnett County Defensive Back of the Year. He was also the only Norcross player to play both ways all year for head coach Keith Maloof.
The Norcross head coach was instrumental in helping the Jackets recruit Autry. “Keith Maloof the head coach at Norcross was also very good to us during the recruiting process and gave us all the information we needed,” Kelly said.
Former Georgia Tech defensive back Jeremy Muyres, who coaches at Norcorss, also aided in connecting the Jackets with Autry.
“I think a lot of Jeremy, he and I have talked a lot,” said Kelly. “He was really impressed with him early. We kept it a secret, you don’t want to put too much out there too quick.”
Autry caught Kelly’s eye at a practice last spring, displaying good raw ability. What made Autry more attractive as time passed was his late growth spurt. When Kelly first saw Autry he was around 6-1, now he’s pushing 6-3.
In the end it was one basic trait that Coach Kelly values that convinced him Anthony Autry is a great fit for Georgia Tech. “Once he committed he was firm and I think the one thing you look for is men who want to be at Georgia Tech and I think he’s one of them,” Kelly said.
