• Will Paul Johnson Open Spring Practice 2012?

Paul Johnson had spring practices open his first two seasons at Georgia Tech. Every minute at Rose Bowl Field was open as well as the Saturday scrimmages at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

There were a few practices at the Atlanta Falcons’ indoor practice facility at Flowery Branch that were closed to the public but that was logistical and practical rather than denying the public or media access.

Johnson also had preseason practices open to the public and media in August his first two seasons at Georgia Tech.

Paul Johnson’s cumulative record at Georgia Tech his first two seasons: 20-7, a victory over UGA and an ACC Championship.

Prior to the 2010 season Coach Johnson decided he wanted to close his practices. He still had a scrimmage or two open to the public but all the practices were closed. He did likewise in the 2011 season.

    Paul Johnson’s 2010 and 2011 cumulative record: 14-12 overall, 0-2 against UGA.

Considering that he is admittedly superstitious by nature one can only wonder if Coach Johnson will understand what his Ouija board has told him and act accordingly as we head into Spring 2012.

I doubt there is a better example of proof that corrolation does not mean causation.

I don't expect anything to be open to the public but the Spring game. Mesage boards, like this one, and the posters that stalk practices with their note pads and cam phones, etc are the reason.

Players I've spoken to say they liked the practices open 'cause it motivated them to play harder 'cause they knew their friends and relatives were watching.

Many teams still do have their practices open and have a successful interaction between the team and the fans/friends/relatives.

Do you feel that the GT coaching staff and/or fans/relatives/friends are not as mature as other programs or due to the GT culture are unable to handle open practices?

Remember, we have a coach who public has admitted that he is VERY superstitious irregardless of your correlation or causation..

9 out of 10 coaches, you know the guys who make the decisions, will tell you at best it's a distraction, at worst, a privacy liability.

Distraction.. good thing practice wasn't open before 2010 'cause that was such a close-knit, high-achieving team, huh? Sure wouldn't have wanted any distractions. LOL

Never heard Paul Johnson mention anything about privacy liability in relation to closing practices.

Uga closes spring practice, too. I don't get what you're getting at.

From the ajc prior to 2011 Spring practice:

All events are closed to the public except the G-Day game.

Maybe we should get a few players arrested and follow all their leads, huh? IMO it worked for GT to have practices open the first two years. You evidently differ. Fine, that is your opinion.

That was before images of formations and such began showing up on the internet. Btw, it's not my opinion, it's CPJ's.

CPJ also says that how you line up doesn't matter and that there's only a few basic ways to line up.

I for one would like to see some, not all, practices open. I will still be a Jacket supporter if it doesn't happen.

I don't understand how it's in our benefit to close practice. Everyone has tape on us, if we're good enough, we'll win, plain and simple.

Seems like a bad PR move to close practices as well.

Not as if you'd go to one anyways

I'm really surprised any football team opens their practice to the public. There is something to be said about the element of surprise.

tp, if you dated a Playboy centerfold and you had seen all her pictures would you be any less surprised the first time you took her clothes off for real?

How's that for an analogy?? LOL

I have no idea what privacy liability means. It is an invasion of privacy to let the public in to see them play? If that is so, then the game itself should be closed. The problem is that coaches, and apparently Johnson is one, think that great secrets will be released to opponents. Right. Good grief. Open the practices, invite the fans, involve the fans, let them know the team is for and of them.

Now, come on. So GT is gonna go single wing, chunk it on every down, and doesn't want the fans to know. Right. There ain't no surprises. Coaches just have to think, for one reason or another, that what they do is really, really special. It's not. Besides which, this is April 2012 and the season is September 2012. Nobody will be surprised at anything. If you want to build a fan base, and everybody on the board seems to agree this is necessary, how do you do that by telling your fan base to take a hike? Coaches apparently think they are launching nukes instead of football plays. It is grandiose, in my estimation.

CPJ didnt have a momma.. just a daddy who nailed his hand to a stump in the woods and left him there with a knife, some flint, and a fox skull on a cold February morning when he was eight. 20 degrees. Fifty miles from his house.
