The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets shook off two straight losses and silenced the critics with a dominating 31-17 victory over the previously unbeaten and #5 BCS ranked Clemson Tigers at Bobby Dodd Stadium Saturday night.
The Jackets built a commanding 24-3 halftime lead and held off the Clemson second half challenge with excellent defense and precision offensive execution. They also played solid special teams throughout the game.
Tech quarterback Tevin Washington had two long runs and gained 176 yards in 27 carries. Unlike the losses to Virginia and Miami, Washington made good decisions in running the triple option and stepped into his throws.
Running back Orwin Smith gained 37 yards on 7 carries while getting into the end zone twice.
Overall the Jackets gained 383 yards in 67 carries as head coach Paul Johnson got his offense into rhythm early. The GT offense controlled ball throughout the game, amassing a 39 to 21 minute time of possession advantage.
Washington completed only 4 of 9 for 60 yards but was effective enough to keep the Clemson defense honest. He also threw a perfect pass that would have resulted in a long gain that was dropped.
The Tech defense was outstanding in holding the high-flying Clemson offense to only 17 points while forcing four turnovers. Defensive back Jemea Thomas was stellar in coverage and intercepted two passes.
Georgia Tech has next Saturday off and will then welcome the Coastal Division leading Virginia Tech Hokies to Bobby Dodd Stadium in a crucial ACC game.on Thursday night, November 10th.
